One in Christ
Galatians 3:28 (ESV) “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, at the table of the Lord, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
In Rome, a woman was property; a slave was a tool. Yet in the early church, women were equal members, Onesimus, a slave was considered a brother, and widows were taken care of. The world noticed: “They share everything except their wives”, said Lucian of Christians. His statement reveals the Gospel transformation that took place and the wicked cultural norms that existed in the ancient world. The Gospel demolished social walls long before modern equality movements existed.
Every time an expecting mother chooses life, or an orphan is adopted, we taste the fruit from the tree planted at the cross. We enjoy the freedom to worship God and equality because early Christians risked their lives to follow Christ. Every freedom comes from God, and the most important freedom is the one we receive at the cross when Jesus frees us from the sin that condemns us to hell. The cross of Jesus frees us from the guilt of sin and restores us to a right relationship with our creator. We are all one in Christ because He loves us and died for us and gives us new life.
