From Spiritual Emptiness to Abundant Joy
John 2:6-7, 9-10 – “Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification… Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water.’… When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine… he called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first… But you have kept the good wine until now.”
Empty purification jars symbolize Israel’s bankrupt rituals—external but unsatisfying. Jesus fills them with water (the Word), transforming it into the finest wine, symbolizing joy, the Messiah, and His blood.
The world’s pleasures run dry quickly, leaving thirst (Psalm 104:15). In the Old Testament wine symbolized joy and the coming of the Messiah. Their joy was exhausted, the ceremonies empty. Jesus fulfills the Old Testament. He is the Messiah bringing joy and ushering in grace (John 1:17).
Examine your thirst. Rituals and worldly chases won’t quench your thirst. Fill your heart with God’s Word daily; let the Spirit turn it to salvation’s joy. Jesus is “best wine” saved for last.
