“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” (John 3:36)
John the Baptist ends his public ministry with a clear gospel invitation and warning in Scripture. The invitation- “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.” The warning- “whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life.” Our response to Jesus is therefore the dividing line of eternity. Belief and obedience bring eternal life through Jesus. Unbelief will bring the wrath of God. It’s a stark and unsettling contrast.
The wrath of God is not unjust, but righteous; it is the settled, holy response of a just God to sin. Apart from Christ, that wrath “remains” on us. But everyone who looks to the Son in faith finds life—abundant, eternal, and free.
Have I moved from merely knowing about Jesus to trusting and obeying Him as the One who holds my eternity? Who in my life needs to hear this decisive truth today?
