The Joy of Pointing to Jesus
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
Crowds that once flocked to John the Baptist were now streaming to Jesus. Instead of jealousy, John responded with joy: “The friend of the bridegroom…rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore, this joy of mine is now complete” (v. 29). John understood his role—he was not the Christ, but the one sent ahead of Him. His greatest happiness came when Jesus took center stage.
Everything we have—gifts, opportunities, even ministry—is given from heaven (v. 27). When we grasp that truth, competition dies and celebration begins. True fulfillment is not found in building our own name but in lifting up the name of Jesus.
Where am I tempted to protect “my” ministry, “my” reputation, or “my” influence? What would change if my deepest joy became hearing the Bridegroom’s voice grow louder than mine?
Jesus, is the Bridegroom. We should rejoice when He receives the greatest attention. He alone deserves it. Let every success in our life point to Jesus. I gladly decrease so that Jesus may increase.
